DescriptionThis key leadership position directs overall railroad transportation operating functions for an assigned territory. As the senior leader for the division, the General Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining a culture and environment of safety and operational excellence. This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with time constraints to meet service goals, overseeing a 24-hour operation. Must possess a sense of urgency and a passion for improving safety and service with a dedication to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. Must have excellent working knowledge of business management principles and practices, financial concepts, and key drivers of profitability and operational performance. Reports to Vice President, Transportation.Accountabilities

  • Manages transportation operations for assigned division and accountable for delivering strong operating performance results.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to safety for all stakeholders by knowing the safety requirements for a given situation, executing the safety rules and expectations with excellence, and applying effective and appropriate tactics in sustaining Safety-focused behavior change.
  • Performs quality operational tests that are relevant to the trends and follows up on those tests by using all applicable skills to reinforce or correct behavior.
  • Demonstrates operational excellence by knowing and applying the business requirements. Demonstrates customer focus and contingency planning to ensure stakeholder expectations are met.
  • Understands the relevant business metrics and applies effective tactics to sustain a culture of operational effectiveness that produces teams of high performing, engaged and empowered operational leaders.
  • Using knowledge of operating rules and processes, applies service interruption, investigation and emergency response activities. Top-level first responder with respect to derailments.
  • Knows the relevant collective bargaining agreement(s), attendance policy and discipline policy for their area.
  • Identifies when a rule/regulation/policy has been violated and has one-on-one accountability conversations with an individual who has not met expectations, using KCS Candor, Aligning the Stars & KCS ABC's, and have the individual produce better results.

    • Bachelors degree or appropriate combination of education and experience.
    • 12+ years of relevant professional experience.
    • 5+ years of progressive railroad operations experience.
    • 5+ years of experience managing and leading people with financial responsibility.
    • Executive presence and understanding of a corporate environment.
    • Experience managing multi-customer market.
    • Strong strategic skills and business acumen combined with the ability to motivate teams to deliver high-quality standards.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional, internal and external work relationships with all stakeholders.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Must be a self-directed, highly motivated and proactive leader.
    • Strong communication skills; written and verbal.
    • Willing to rotate own schedule to be visible to all clients, team members as needed.Working Conditions
      • On-call responsibilities are an essential function of this job. Employees must have the ability and willingness to support operations of mission critical systems and/or processes 24 hours per day/7 days per week. On-call assignments may include after-hours, weekends and holidays.
      • Business travel is an essential requirement. Employees must be able and willing to travel away from their primary work location up to 50% of the time.We Offer:
