Overton Brooks VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full time permanent physician in Pulmonary - Critical Care. The Pulmonary-Critical Care section is a pillar of the institution and boasts a strong clinical and teaching reputation in the region. Critical Care Medicine boards are desirable.

  • Inpatient and Outpatient Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
  • Assist in education for Pulmonary/Critical Care fellows, Internal Medicine residents and medical students.
  • Attending responsibilities for the Medical ICU team (Medical Residents).
  • Critical Care consultation in Surgical ICU (with Medical Residents and Critical Care Fellow).
  • Inpatient consultations for Pulmonary.
  • Medical diagnosis and treatment of conditions, injuries, and diseases.
  • Admissions, work-ups, diagnosis, interpretation of tests of critically ill patients.
  • Consultation services to patients and families.
  • This position includes a faculty appointment at the affiliated Louisiana State University Health and Science Center commensurate with qualifications. Duties include clinical practice and teaching Pulmonary fellows, residents and medical students.


    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm (on call as required)

    Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.


      Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible

      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: Moderate Lifting (15-44 lbs); Moderate Carrying (15-44 lbs); Straight Pulling (up to 2-3 hours); Pushing (up to 2-3 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Walking (up to 2-3 hours); Standing (up to 6-8 hours); Kneeling (up to 2-3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 4-6 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable; Far vision correctable; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted).
